Being a Club Coach was one of the best experiences I had in Toastmasters International. Through teamwork, dedication, and tenacious efforts, we not only reached Distinguishing heights as a group, but also develop strong friendships along the way. As a person who successfully served in this role before, I can tell you what a Club Coach truly is.
A CLUB COACH IS A NON-DOMINATOR
Contrary to some beliefs, a club coach does not dominate Toastmaster clubs. Instead, the coach can be seen as more of a team player helping the club becomes a successful for within the District. This is usually done by being supportive in nature and positive by encouragement.
A CLUB COACH IS AN OUTSIDER LOOKING IN
Whenever a Toastmaster club needs help, a coach should be there to offer a helping hand. Starting off as a non-member, the Club Coach would enter a club with an open mind. This especially works when the coach and club have the right synergy combination.
A CLUB COACH IS A DETECTIVE
Through the member surveys and responses, a Club Coach can play the role of a detective. The sleuthing act done by a Coach can not only help find the problems that would hinder a club, but also come up with the solutions that can counter it. Once the problems of a club are resolve, it would make certain goals much easier to reach.
A CLUB COACH IS A TIMEGIVER
The best Club Coaches are usually the one that spend the most time with their clubs. The more time spent by a coach, the more likely a club will succeed in becoming Distinguished. Additionally, a coach would spent time writing paperwork to either the District Governor (and/or Club Coach Chair) letting them know the state of the club that is being coached. Lack of time being spent on the club will only hinder its potential success.
In conclusion, is it worth spending the time working with (or being) a Club Coach? You better believe it!! When it is done successfully, everybody benefits from successful Coaching. The clubs, the Division, and the District and the individual can all become winners in this process. All it takes is for people to not only volunteer their time as a Club Coach, but also a club to offer that helping hand for a Coach. It can be done and it is possible!!
REQUIREMENTS
There are five basic requirements that must be met in order to get started with the Club Coaching process for both Club and Club Coach. BEFORE you even look at these requirements, PLEASE MAKE AN OFFICIAL VOTE ON THE NEED OF A CLUB COACH FIRST!! Once a vote for a club coach is made, please notify your Area Governor of the need.
THE FIVE COACHING REQUIREMENTS
The person to be a Club Coach is NOT a member of the Club
The Club has 12 or fewer members.
In our District, we require the Club Coach has gone through training and be at least a CTM.
The Club Coach agrees to coach a Club AND the Club agrees to have the person as a Club Coach.
The Area Governor is aware of the request. Typically, the Area Governor notifies the Division Governor who makes the request to the Coach Chair.
If you or the Club you are planning to Coach meets all of the five requirements, please click here for Trained Club Coaches.
WHEN DOES THE TERM BEGIN AND END?
The Club Coach term would begin at the date of appointment by Toastmasters International (via the District Governor). It would last one of the following two ways:
1. When the Club being coach becomes a Distinguished Club by the end of the year
OR
2. By the end of the second Toastmaster year after the appointment date (June 30th)
